Leaving the College
What type of leave are you wanting to take?
What type of leave are you wanting to take?
Personal Withdrawal during the current semester / term. (I will not finish but instead earn W or WF grades, depending upon the date of departure.)
Not Returning after this current semester / term. (I will receive grades as earned, and I understand that if placed on academic suspension, that status will supersede my voluntary departure. My status will be confirmed only after final grades are posted.)
Leave of Absence following this current semester/term.
The college may grant a leave of absence, for up to two semesters, for personal development. (Participation in an approved study away program, whether foreign or domestic, is managed through the Office of Global Citizenship, and students studying on such a program should not fill out this form). Students wishing a leave must submit a formal request for leave, stating their specific plans for the period of absence and the planned date of return. (Students pursuing a formal, recognized study away program will work directly with the Office of Global Education.) A dean will review the request and communicate with the student, explaining any conditions of the leave, before formally confirming the leave of absence.
Students seeking a leave of absence to enroll at another institution will have their leaves denied; instead, such students should use the "not returning" form and then seek formal reinstatement when wishing to return to Sewanee.
The deadlines for submission of leave of absence applications for the Advent and Easter semesters are August 1 and January 1, respectively. Students who do not meet these deadlines but spend a semester or more away from Sewanee forfeit any deposit, are considered “withdrawn,” and must apply for reinstatement. A second reservation deposit is necessary to reserve a space in the college for the semester of planned re-entry.
Normally, students returning from an approved leave of absence do not have to apply for reinstatement but instead need only complete a “return to campus” notification by April 1 for the following Advent semester or October 25 for the following Easter semester. Students who do not meet these deadlines will be re-classified as “withdrawn” and must apply for reinstatement. (A student with an outstanding account will have his or her request to return placed on hold until the account is balanced.)
Please use this form to initiate a formal personal (and immediate) withdrawal from Sewanee. This form gathers basic information; after completing this form, please contact the Office of Student Success to set up an appointment to discuss your withdrawal (931-598-1311 or
studentsuccess@sewanee.edu
). Your withdrawal will not be official until you meet with a representative from the Office of Student Success for final review and approval.
Be aware that you will be assigned "W" grades if you withdraw before the last day to withdraw from classes without penalty (see the official College calendar at
http://registrar.sewanee.edu/calendars/college-of-arts-and-sciences/
and select "include important deadlines"); if you withdraw after that date, you will receive "WF" grades (equivalent to an F). Thus a personal and immediate withdrawal is not to be pursued lightly, and you will want to confer with a representative from the Office of Student Success about possibilities.
Please be aware that if you withdraw, you will have to apply for reinstatement. Reinstatement is never guaranteed.
Please use this form to initiate a formal withdrawal from Sewanee, effective at the end of the current semester (or immediately, if completed between semesters). If you are on campus, you will need to meet with a representative from the Office of Student Success to confirm your departure; if we are on break and you are not on campus, then a phone conversation should suffice.
“Not returning” is an option only for students in good academic and social standing at the end of a semester. Accordingly, if you begin this process during a semester, please know that this status can be approved only after grades have been submitted, and any suspension supersedes a statement of "not returning."
If you withdraw and then want to return, you will have to apply for reinstatement. Reinstatement is never guaranteed.
